Inspire – High potential and gifted education
The staff at Maryland Public School are committed to the NSW Department of Education’s Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) policy, with a strong focus on talent development across intellectual, creative, social-emotional, and physical domains.
We recognise our responsibility to identify high potential in all its forms and are dedicated to igniting that potential through quality teaching, developing talent enrichment opportunities, and targeted support. Our programs are designed to challenge, engage, and extend students, helping them grow and thrive in their areas of identified strength.
The Sprout Podcast
As part of our Aboriginal HPGE program, Stage 3 students have been writing, producing, and editing their very own podcast aligned directly to their cultural and/or aspirational goal in Personalised Learning Pathways. We’re excited to announce that Episode 1 is now ready to listen to! Stay tuned for more engaging and creative content from our talented students. Mrs Kelly our proud principal and Leigh Ridgeway AEO loved engaging in this innovative opportunity for our students!

What is high potential and gifted education?
Inspire – High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Maryland Public School, HPGE lives in everyday practice. Many students have high potential, and we help that potential to grow into something powerful.
- Teachers identify students' learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students. We provide learning pathways, including enrichment and extension programs and acceleration.
- Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
- Groups are flexible, students take lead roles, and feedback is strengths-based with clear goals and self-assessment.
- Our teachers engage in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners
Every student is individual, so opportunities are flexible and diverse.
- Students deepen strengths through debating and public speaking competitions, school band and choir.
- Talent is celebrated through talent development groups. Students enjoy new learning experiences, where they can explore their talents, interests, and develop new skills in a supportive environment.
- Leadership grows through SRC and wellbeing is made visible with daily check ins, Principal Awards and The Resilience Project.
- Daily life invites curiosity and belonging, with lunchtime clubs including art, dance, construction and more.
- Sport matters too, with PSSA sport, training and coaching that include differentiated PE.
Our students participate in a wide range of statewide programs to extend and enrich student potential.
- Students participate in opportunities such as Premier's Spelling Bee, Premier’s Multicultural Public Speaking, APSMO Maths Olympiad, Premier's Reading Challenge and Newcastle Permanent Maths Competition.
- Statewide and NSW Department of Education support is available for high potential and gifted students, and we help with entries, preparation and reflection so every experience feeds back into learning.
