Religion and ethics

NSW public schools offer special religious education and special education in ethics, delivered by approved providers wherever available.

During enrolment, you can choose a special religious education option for your child from the school’s available approved providers. You can withdraw your child from special religious education by selecting alternative meaningful activities, or special education in ethics if it’s available.

You can update your preference by writing to the school or through the online form available at participating schools.

Special Religious Education (SRE)

Christian SRE is offered to all students K-6 at Maryland Public School.

Christian SRE is provided by SRE teachers from different Christian denominations and churches.  The approved providers in this combined arrangement are NSW and ACT Baptists. The Christian SRE curriculum is authorised by NSW and ACT Baptists. The curriculum, ‘GodSpace’ is based on Good News about Jesus Christ and learning the key elements of Christian life and culture. Further information can be found at https://godspace.org.au

 All Christian SRE teachers are authorised and trained by an approved provider.

 On enrolment (or as required) parents/carers complete a SRE participation letter for their child/ children. Once completed any changes to a child’s enrolment in SRE should be made in writing.

At MPS, SRE is delivered on Fridays. Three stage based groups have a 30min lesson each between 9-10.30am.

During the time that SRE classes are being held, students not attending will be located in a separate space – (sometimes this means students will visit another classroom for the duration of SRE)  and will participate in meaningful activities (not regular classwork) e.g. literacy/maths activities, individual research projects.
